Having trouble getting an Uber? Think about how you’ve been treating your drivers.

In Pittsburgh, it’s gotten tough to get an Uber or Lyft ride. I gather this is also the case elsewhere.

I know, because whenever my car is in the shop, I rely on Uber and Lyft to get around. Until this week, that is.

I can’t speak for other drivers. I hardly speak to them. I tend to be an introvert, so often even when I’m riding, the ride is mostly silent. I can speak only for myself.

But since I put up signs essentially asking riders to behave themselves in my car (the latest version is in figure 1), my Uber driver ratings have plummeted. I was up to 4.95 at one point. I’m now down to 4.87.

Which is to say that if I want to continue as an Uber/Lyft driver—really, I don’t[1]—I cannot draw reasonable boundaries around how passengers may conduct themselves in my car.

Uber and Lyft drivers don’t get paid much, even when you pay a lot,[2] and in California, Proposition 22 has, utterly unsurprisingly, proven to be a sham.[3] In Britain, the supreme court has thrown out the “independent contractor” scam,[4] but here in the U.S., drivers continue to be denied basic benefits or any semblance of financial security. This is all part and parcel of how low wage workers are treated generally.[5]

Back in Pittsburgh, I took an Uber to fetch my laundry in Dormont the other day (March 30, 2021), and paid $90 for a round trip. This is roughly a 13-14 mile trip altogether, plus the wait time while I was in the laundromat (the initial price didn’t change, so I was apparently within Uber’s allowance for its initial estimate). Had I been the driver, I’d expect to get something like $20, maybe less, for that trip. Which is to say, $70 or more of that fare went to Uber, which is still hemorrhaging ludicrous amounts of money and still seemingly has little prospect of ever being profitable,[6] while the driver absorbed almost all the risk and put in almost all the effort. Drivers don’t deserve your abuse as well. (And I’m now in a rental car.)

It’s true that drivers can give abusive passengers low ratings. And when I’ve been riding, I’ve seen drivers scrutinize their next rides to decide whether or not they would accept them, likely in part based on passenger ratings.

And it’s also true that I was never going to be a happy Uber and Lyft driver. It’s absolutely not what I earned a Ph.D. for.[7] But with my car in the shop with the dreaded “check hybrid system” indication, after an expensive year of suspension, steering, and other generally wheel-related work due to Pittsburgh roads, I’m really thinking there’s no way this is tolerable, let alone worth it, even if it is my only option.

So be nice to your driver. Nicer than you’ve been to me.


Update, April 2, 2021: I’m expecting to get my car back today and probably be back on the road tomorrow. I remain absolutely furious about the abuse and exploitation I suffer from both passengers and the companies. And there is no way I can reconcile myself to the reality of the job prospects I am left with.[8] But I have modified my sign (figure 2):

I decided to take out the QR codes because they take up too much space and the one time I saw some poor sap trying to use them, he had to have completely failed as he was holding his phone so close to try to only scan the one code (that’s not how you do it).


Update, April 3, 2021: A footnote has been augmented with another source I found in my archive on how Amazon treats its workers, where I explain that how I and other drivers are treated working for Uber and Lyft is part and parcel of how low-wage workers are treated generally.[9] On the topic of Amazon, the company now admits that drivers are having to urinate in bottles,[10] Amazon had previously—and ludicrously—denied the allegation.[11]
