It should be obvious by now: Donald Trump and Doug Mastriano are not the future of the Republican Party

A few days ago (on March 23rd, if you must know), I wrote:

Figures from [the Anti-Defamation League] showed sharp rises in antisemitic activity nationwide last year. Pennsylvania saw a 65% increase.

The report, released Thursday, details how Pennsylvania and New Jersey broke records when it came to vandalism and harassment targeting Jewish people. With 114 reported incidents in Pennsylvania alone, the amount of activity was the highest in the ADL’s four-plus decades of collecting data.[1]

Increases in anti-Semitic activity are a nationwide trend,[2] and I’m inclined to associate it with an increasing radicalization of white Christian nationalist supporters of Doug Mastriano, who ran for Pennsylvania governor last year, and of Donald Trump.

Both candidates have hewn to an extreme paleoconservative and social conservative agenda,[3] even as it became increasingly apparent that this agenda would—and did—alienate voters in the general election.[4] It’s not a tilt that makes obvious sense.[5]

It’s reasonable to think these extreme views will not be a deal-breaker for white Christian nationalists. But given the 2022 results,[6] I just don’t see how this wins the 2024 general election.[7]

I see from social media that I need to explain the bit about the tilt that doesn’t make obvious sense.

The question here is, why, when the message of the 2022 midterm election is plain to everyone except this extreme paleoconservative and social conservative subset of white Christian nationalism, does this subset in effect double down on an already failed campaign message?

In this, I refer to two of seven tendencies of conservatism in my dissertation, namely paleoconservatism and social conservatism.[8] That taxonomy became obsolete as Donald Trump made conservatism almost completely monolithic, subsuming all the tendencies I had identified into white Christian nationalism.[9]

Paleoconservatives were the segregationists, the racists who would tell you to your face that they are racist. At the extreme, they include skinheads, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, etc. They are the white supremacist[10] part of white Christian nationalism. An article by Robert Castro recently came to my attention that connects paleoconservatism with militarism and toxic masculinity.[11]

Social conservatives were mostly evangelical Protestants, stridently opposed to abortion.[12] More recently, as especially seen in the Christian Post, they’ve taken up an obsession with transgenderism, which seems to outrage them in equal measure to abortion. Social conservatives desperately embraced Donald Trump despite his evident lack of evangelical Protestant virtue in significant part because they saw him as a savior of the country, as they believe it should be, from a rising tide of secularism.

Castro’s article[13] got me thinking of that paleoconservative and social conservative subset as distinguishable from white Christian nationalism as a whole not by ideology so much as by radicalization.

But to repeat my initial question, we saw voters repudiate these views along with Donald Trump’s “stolen election” obsession.[14] How does it make sense for this extremist subset to keep pushing vote-losing issues?

To understand this, you need to understand how paleoconservatives understand white people. Paleoconservatives are firmly convinced that, on some level, all white people on some level agree with them. They deride white people who profess tolerant, cosmopolitan, or anti-racist views as having on-some-level-knowingly sold out.[15]

My hypothesis would be that the extreme paleoconservative and social conservative subset of white Christian nationalism embraces this view not just with segregation and white supremacy, but the entire white Christian nationalist agenda. Thus, as they imagine it, all white people are on some level white Christian nationalists. It makes it urgent to enact this agenda while white people still comprise a plurality of the electorate. This, they believe, is their last chance to “save” “their” country.

Because white Christian nationalists dominate the Republican Party, they’ll likely prevail in the primaries. But they now repel independent and Democratic Party voters and thus cannot gain the plurality they had in 2016, which is why they lost in 2022. I’m seeing no reason to believe they’ll be any more successful in 2024.

I’ve written off the Republican Party before, in fact, following the Watergate scandal and Richard Nixon’s resignation. I thought there was no way they could recover, that they would be forever discredited.

I was young then. I’m about fifty years older now. I think the Republicans will recover, but only after they’ve shaken off Trump and white Christian nationalism. It won’t be easy for them to do, it will take them time to do it, and I’ll have a better sense of their future prospects after they’ve been defeated yet again in 2024.

It’s also not the first time I’ve written off Donald Trump. After, it turns out correctly, forecasting his election victory in my dissertation defense at the end of 2015, I backpedaled as he descended ever deeper into a black hole that he hasn’t since stopped descending into. For a time, while he was president, he seemed to be sucking the entire United States in with him. But he lost in 2020, he lost again in 2022,[16] and while some white Christian nationalist-dominated states are certainly following Trump into that black hole, Pennsylvania demonstrates that this has limits, and the country seems to have settled into a relatively stable orbit. I don’t think we’re all taking the plunge with him.

We should not mistake the extremism we see in the paleoconservative and social conservative subset of white Christian nationalism for strength. Electorally, the 2022 midterms demonstrated[17] it isn’t there at the national level. And I suspect this will limit their support even among right-wing militia groups.

Update, March 27, 2023: I have added a second-to-last paragraph acknowledging a previous underestimation of Donald Trump. This necessitated further editing of the final paragraph to preserve clarity. I’ve also added to the description of social conservatism, noting social conservative outrage at transgenderism.

Update, March 29, 2023: So here’s an odd and somewhat dissonant thing. It turns out that many white Christian nationalists aren’t actually practicing Christians. Kelefa Sanneh compares many Christian nationalists’ identification as Christian to that of being Jewish: One can be a secular Jew, which is to say, Jewish by heritage even if not in actual practice. But the markers of white Christian nationalism are pretty much what you’d expect: fearful of societal change, ethnocentric, segregationist, and theocratic.[18]

Update, June 17, 2023: Jonathan Chait argues that Ron DeSantis is campaigning to racist bigots.[19] We might suspect he’s competing for the same voters as Donald Trump (and Doug Mastriano). This makes sense if the majority of your voters are racist bigots, which might be true of Republicans, but, since the 2022 midterms, still appears unlikely to be true of the general electorate.[20]
