The psychopathy of the spike in COVID-19 cases

Of course, the assholes driving a national, and apparently international, spike in COVID-19 cases (figure 1) are only part of the problem.

Fig. 1. Cartoon, apparently by Peter Schrank, via the Telegraph, July 6, 2020, fair use.

In the following tweet, note that the chart at left displays negative percentages. These are drops in employment, that is, increases in unemployment, affecting various groups:

Yesterday (July 6), I wrote, “It’s happening. It’s not like we didn’t know evictions would happen.”[1] But we also knew this unemployment would happen, we knew that people would lose their health insurance, we knew people would fall behind on their bills, we knew the social safety net was inadequate, we knew people would feel forced to work when they shouldn’t, we knew.[2] There was absolutely no excuse for the elite not to act; it was well known that what they did do was grievously inadequate, and that what Sarah Jones wrote over three months ago remains as true today as the day she wrote it: “They’re Screwing Around in Congress.”[3]

But now, while people are just beginning to lose their homes due to elite indifference, in large part because they still don’t have jobs, and in large part because it’s nearly impossible for low-wage workers to catch up on bills when they fall behind because they don’t have jobs,[4] we have a bunch of jackasses, refusing to wear masks, refusing to social distance, all so they can drink and party (figure 1),[5] as if they’re celebrating the misery, and all so we can do it all, all over again.[6]

This is not stupidity. This is not ignorance. This is not misinformation. This is madness and it is malice.

Yes, as I have previously written, these people are psychopaths.[7] And so are the elites who responded to conspiracy theory touting,[8] often white supremacist, gun-toting anti-lockdown protests;[9] ignored medical advice;[10] and rushed the reopening and let their fellow psychopaths loose,[11] even as Anthony Fauci said (in paraphrase) yesterday (July 6) that the country “is still ‘knee-deep’ in its first wave of coronavirus infections and must act immediately to tackle the recent surge.”[12]

Greed, it seems, is good, for psychopaths, jackasses, and assholes, but certainly not for the vulnerable. Just as it always is, because our society consistently rewards psychopaths, jackasses, and assholes and always at the expense of the vulnerable.
