Yet again, a season for cynicism

Update, May 10, 2020: I have found Adam Serwer’s argument that part of the decision to aggressively push reopening of the economy likely stems from the race of many victims.[1] I can acknowledge this here and have modified the text accordingly.

Donald Trump signed the CARES Act, offering limited economic relief to Amerikkkans facing a lockdown meant to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, on March 27, 2020.[2] It was very well known at the time and has only become more clear since that this was inadequate[3] and an entirely predictable backlash against the lockdown has ensued,[4] as the entirely predictable job losses have mounted,[5] but the Democrats are only now getting around to proposing another package of relief,[6] which has yet to be unveiled, now that Republicans have already promised that any such proposal will be dead on arrival in the Senate and at the White House.[7]

And yet I am supposed to accept this latest Democratic Party appeal to the Left—Chuck Schumer even used the word ‘Rooseveltian’[8]—as a manifestation of genuine concern for small business owners and the working class. I suppose it is an improvement on moves, damn the deaths,[9] damn the old and the weak,[10] especially damn people, especially workers, of color,[11] to reopen the economy regardless.[12] But coming so late, it completely lacks credibility to me. The Democrats have, by delaying that which could not wait, ceded the momentum to those who would, following neoliberal dogma, sacrifice human lives to the capitalist god.[13] It is a hollow gesture that to me instead recalls their ludicrous impeachment of Donald Trump, “[t]he stupidest impeachment ever, historically notable first for all the offenses it failed to charge Donald Trump with,[14] second for its utterly predictable futility, and third for its transparent (and apparently failed) attempt to protect Joe Biden.[15][16] It smacks rather of complicity.

I guess Nancy Pelosi has her ice cream.[17] And Bernie Sanders, having endorsed a neoliberal rapist for the presidency,[18] can tweet about further relief:

The ice cream and the endorsement really all mean the same thing and the same thing the Democrats have meant for decades: Fuck the Left.[19] They’re just pretending otherwise, like they always do, but only when they want our votes.
