Alex Azar’s head remains attached to his body despite Wall Street Journal reporting suggesting him as a scapegoat[1] for Donald Trump’s own dangerous performance.[2] I now suspect the problem is that Azar just isn’t a big enough scapegoat.
The trouble here is that for scapegoating to work, it must be plausible, and that depends in large part on the credibility of the scapegoater. Even a lot of authoritarian populists will know that Trump’s disinfectant injection and ultraviolet cure suggestions were dangerous nonsense.[3] And the strident hydroxychloroquine quackery was exposed a little too quickly and the ensuing silence was a little too sudden.[4] Thus deprived of a miracle cure, confronted with his own malfeasance,[5] and wanting to divert attention from the trade in non-human animals,[6] which has always been dangerous,[7] Trump wants something bigger than Azar for a scapegoat, he needs to reattach his credibility to something his base (almost entirely authoritarian populists and social conservatives, but with the complicity of every other tendency of conservatism) can believe, and the longstanding China Wuhan Lab conspiracy theory just might do.

But experts say the research also carried an implicit risk: the possibility that the lab itself could facilitate the spread of the very diseases the scientists were trying to prevent.
On Thursday, the U.S. intelligence community released an assessment formally concluding that the virus behind the coronavirus pandemic originated in China. While asserting that the pathogen was not man-made or genetically altered, the statement pointedly declined to rule out the possibility that the virus had escaped from the complex of laboratories in Wuhan that has been at the forefront of global research into bat-borne viruses linked to multiple epidemics over the past decade. . . .[8]
Hydroxychloroquine, the disinfectants, the ultraviolet light can all be rapidly refuted. Trump needs a bad guy; the origins of the novel coronavirus remain murky; and it really doesn’t matter that experts, whom Trump and his followers anyway distrust, think there is no evidence supporting the conspiracy theory, even that the theory is implausible. What matters is that they can’t rule it out.[9] We’ve gone to war over less.
