Hoping for cleaner air

I’m hoping we’ve dodged a bullet. My mother is allergic—with asthma—to at least one of the new cats. I’ve been running a grooming comb through their fur and she has put some stuff on them that’s supposed to knock down the dander. But last night the allergies were awful and a strong antihistamine was insufficient.

I have to say that I am profoundly opposed to the idea of taking cats to a shelter anyway. But these cats are even more innocent than most; they are sweet and loving, and not anxious to run outdoors or into places where they’re not supposed to. Their behavior is ideal. So I was pretty upset last night and not very gracious about the subject with my mother today. They do not deserve to be in a shelter—no cat does—and taking them there would be to confound one injustice (my mother’s asthma) with another.

But we’ve gotten a large HEPA air purifier. I hope it works.
