U.S. ranks 53rd in press freedom

Reporters Without Borders has released its 2006 Worldwide Press Freedom Index. The U.S. is slipping, largely due to Bush administration threats against journalists who dare to question the War on Terror and a refusal by courts to recognize as a right the need for journalists to protect their sources. The relatively low ranking also occurs as other countries improve their rankings.
